Welcome to the Centre for Political Studies. Founded in 1971, it has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence. The Centre launched ita M.Phil./Ph.D. programme with 15 students in the very first year of its existence. The MA program was launched in the following academic year. In keeping with the spirit of the JNU Act of 1966, the Centre for Political Studies came to incorporate a strong interdisciplinary emphasis in the structure and design of its syllabi. Since then, the Centre for Political Studies has become one of the largest Centres of the School of Social Sciences drawing students from all parts of the country as well as abroad.
The Centre offers degrees both at the Masters and the Doctorate levels. It represents all the major streams of Political Science as a discipline, including Political Theory, Philosophy and Thought, Indian Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Public Administration. The courses taught at the Masters level equip the students with various ideas, concepts, analytical tools and approaches to the discipline. By the end of the last semester, students are in a position to choose a career based on their Masters training and/or develop an interest to pursue research on a topic or theme in a particular stream of the discipline.
There is an excellent blend of young, mid-career and senior level faculty at the Centre. Together, these faculty members present expertise in all the streams of the discipline. They teach the students and guide different researchers in their respective areas of specialization using a multidisciplinary approaches.
The all-Indian and international composition of students, coming from diverse social, regional, cultural and economic backgrounds, provides a unique exposure conducive to learning about each other and the rich diversity of our society well beyond the classroom teaching.
Different kinds of fellowships are made available for students coming from relatively poorer sections of the society who show a commitment and passion to pursue higher studies.
