Mission:
The mission of our Centre is to promote excellence in teaching, research, and learning. We are committed to producing students with a strong foundation in the technical knowledge of the languages we teach, as well as the complementary skills necessary for a successful professional in the modern world and expertise to pursue academic research in the subject. We strive to instill in our students a sense of service, professionalism, ethics, and dedication. Our mission is to build infrastructure and human resource capacity, providing students with world-class education and research opportunities, ensuring their success in their chosen fields. The Centre of Persian and Central Asian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University offers B.A. (Hons.), M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. Programs in Persian: M.A. and Certificate course in Pashto language, and Certificate course in Uzbek language. The language laboratory is used to develop students' language proficiency and enhance their skills in interpretation. Besides Modern Persian Studies, also excels in Translations, Classical and Sufi literature, Area Studies of Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan; Indo-Persian Studies, Indo-Iran, and Central Asian Relations; Ancient Iranian Studies; History of Persian Language and Literature and Stylistics in Modern and Classical Persian Literature topics which are exclusively taught in CP&CAS, JNU, are Sufism; Indo-Persian Literature, Medieval Indian Culture and Civilization, and a host of other topics that come within the purview of Persian & Central Asian Studies are also given due place in the broad curriculum of the Centre.
At the Centre of Persian and Central Asian Studies, we recognize the value of an interdisciplinary approach. This approach not only broadens the horizons of our students but also enriches their learning experience. That's why we offer service courses to students of West Asian Studies, SIS, and the Centre of Historical Studies in SSS. We also provide a maximum number of service courses to students from other Centres in SLL&CS. Our faculty members teach Special Courses in Persian for postgraduate Urdu students of the Centre of Indian Languages. Additionally, we offer Four Optional Courses for the UG students of various Centres of the School and Two Tool Courses for the undergraduate students of various Centres of the School, further demonstrating our commitment to interdisciplinary learning.
The faculty members of the Centre, in addition to their teaching responsibilities, take a keen interest in participating in various national and international seminars. Different universities from India and abroad regularly invite the Centre's teachers to deliver lectures, including their orientation courses for teachers. Many of our faculty members have also earned national and international awards, honors, and recognition and have been placed in higher positions at other reputable institutions.
Under the Indo-Afghan Cultural Exchange Programme, a visiting Professor from Kabul University is invited to teach the Pashto language in the Centre. The Centre has also established a Pashto chair, supported by the Ministry of Education and the UGC, Government of India, New Delhi.
The Centre has also signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with numerous universities in Uzbekistan, in addition to Tashkent National University, Uzbekistan. These collaborations open up a world of opportunities for our students. Recently, two optional courses and a Certificate course in the Uzbek language were introduced. The Centre also plans to introduce the teaching of Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and Tajik languages at the Centre and establish special chairs for topics of higher research in the field of Indo-Persian Studies in the near future.
