SCIS

Erstwhile the School of Information Technology (SIT) established in the year 2001 and renamed as School of Computational and Integrative Sciences (SC&IS) in 2010, the School carries out teaching and research in the inter-disciplinary areas of computational genomics, bioinformatics & drug discovery, database management & systems biology, high performance computing and artificial intelligence. The aim of the School is to innovate and integrate computational and analytical approaches adopted in different branches of sciences to find solutions. Rapid advancement in science and the cutting edge technologies enable and drive research in a big way, providing the opportunity to innovate. The School’s academic and research programs are currently focused on the core area of computational and systems biology with future emphasis on the study of complex systems, high density data analysis, theoretical biophysical chemistry and computational neurosciences.

Courses : We offer.....

The School has been offering programs in Computational & Systems Biology and Bioinformatics, Complex Systems & Big Data Analysis. The School has encouraged intake from multiple disciplines into these programs - Information Technology, Bioinformatics, the Life Sciences/Biotechnology, the Physical and Chemical Sciences, among others.

P.G. Diploma in Big Data Analytics
Post-Graduate Diploma in Big Data Analytics (PGD), with specialization in Biological Big Data. This is a sponsored skill development program of the Department of Biotechnology, and is aimed at training postgraduates in the upcoming field of Big Data analytics for life sciences and health. Trained graduates from this program are expected to learn key technologies of data sciences, such as machine learning, data integration and modeling technologies, which can be applied in an academic, and industry environment in the future. The curricular work leading to the award of Post- Graduate Diploma shall be spread over a period of two semesters – one Monsoon Semester and one Winter Semester with a provision of a project report to be submitted by student at the end of the Winter Semester.

M.Sc. in Computational and Integrative Sciences
M.Sc. degree in Computational and Integrative Sciences (Students will be admitted on the basis of GAT-B ranking through DBT). The School runs an MSc program in Computational and Integrative Sciences, funded by the Department of Biotechnology at present with a specialization in either Computational Biology or Complex Systems. The program aims to provide a rigorous training, equipping the students with theoretical understanding and practical mastery in the state-of-art computational and experimental techniques to model and analyze the biological and complex systems. In the first year of the program, the students are provided with the conceptual knowledge in the biological sciences, computer programming, physical sciences, mathematics, and statistics including data analytical skills required in the new phase of analysis and understanding of large-scale data. In the last year, students will be familiarized with advanced skill sets, including methods in omics, big data analytics, mathematical modelling and computer simulation etc. followed by specialized research projects that apply the core skills taught in the previous semesters
Ph.D in Computational and Integrative Sciences
The School encourages intake from multiple disciplines into the Ph.D programme, which are grouped with independently specified intake requirements as (a) Physical Sciences (b) Biological Sciences and (c) Mathematical and Computer Sciences, to provide an optimal peer-group of analytical, domain and computational skills within each program. The admitted students can pursue research in different areas as per the expertise of the respective faculty. The research program at SCIS is supported by good computational infrastructure. The School manages a centralized facility for high-performance computers, consisting of computer clusters with multiprocessor nodes, large-memory nodes and GPUs in addition to project-based specialized workstations/servers to facilitate specialized research. The school takes pride in being among the country’s best institutions in imparting high-value employability-related skills to its students in different areas of research.

Our Partners

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
