JNU was established in 1969 by an act of parliament.It was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister and was founded by Indira Gandhi, (Nehru's daughter), and G. Parthsarthi was the first vice-chancellor.
The objective of the founders was to make the university a premier institution of higher learning and to promote research and teaching leading to the increasing engagement of its students and teachers in higher level academic work and national and international policy making.

School of Computer and Systems Sciences was established in the year 1974 as one of the premier teaching centers of Computer Science discipline in the country. School offers MCA (6 Sem), M.Tech (4 Sem) and PhD programs. These programs are specially designed to provide the theoretical background along with practical experience in the field of Computer Science to meet the growing manpower requirements of the global software and hardware industry. The research and teaching is carried out in the area of Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Software Engineering, AI, Parallel/Distributed Systems, Software Engineering, Cryptography, Image Processing, Computer Networks and Mobile Computing, Computer Architecture, VLSI Design, Embedded Systems, Programming Languages, MEMS, Operation Research etc.
