SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES JAWAHARLAL NEHRU UNIVERSITY a talk on Pharmaceuticals and Personal care products: a new entrant in the world of waste Speaker: Prof. Syed E. Hasan Professor Emeritus, Environmental Geoscience, University of Missouri, Kansas City, MO, USA. Date: 3rd February 2016 (Wednesday) Abstract: Modern society uses thousands of chemicals in a wide variety of consumer products that not only put a heavy demand on the finite resources of the earth but also require careful management of the waste that is generated at every step of the life cycle of the product. While the municipal solid and hazardous wastes have received due attention and, to a great extent, are being managed in an environmentally-sound manner, the emerging category of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) that are getting ubiquitous in the environmental have received little or no attention. The presentations will discuss the universe of PPCPs, their sources, pathways, and environmental fate. Potential adverse health effects associated with PPCPs presence in the environmental media will be addressed, and a brief review of current research to deal with the issue will be included in the presentation.
