VACANCY ADVERTISEMENT: UKRI-GCRF One Health Poultry Hub
Background: In South and SE Asia poultry production is expanding rapidly, creating highly diverse value chains. Poultry sector intensification aims to produce cheap protein for families and for local, national and regional markets but it can also promote health hazards. High stocking densities, fast turnover, genetic homogeneity, complex transport/trading networks, live bird markets, poor biosecurity and inappropriate antimicrobials/vaccine use all play roles in host-pathogen evolution and selection of pathogen variants with increased virulence, vaccine/antimicrobial resistance and broadened host range.
Using innovative methods that enhance existing microbiological, epidemiological and social sciences, we will contribute research-based evidence to support policies and systems that can meet anticipated demand for poultry meat and egg production whilst minimising adverse public health consequences and risks to human/animal health and welfare in a One Health framework. We will explicitly build capacity for the interdisciplinary research required for a Hub with supporting cross-sectorial collaborations at national and regional levels.
