The Centre for East Asian Studies is one of the thirteen Centres in the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well.

 

The students of the Centre are drawn from various social sciences and humanities such as History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. The academic curriculum covers various dimensions of modern and contemporary East Asia – China, Japan, and Korea – one of the most dynamic and significant regions of the world today. The key objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of the foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on enhancing language skills. A total number of 73 students are currently registered (about 41 in Chinese Studies, 13 in Japanese studies and 14 in Korean Studies) in the PhD. Programme.

 

Currently, there are fourteen faculty members in the Centre. Each faculty member specializes and teaches courses in an area of her/his interest in the region.
 
Legacy
Several distinguished faculty who taught and mentored the young research scholars include late Prof. Gargi Dutt, late Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, late Prof. G. P. Deshpande, late Prof. Naranarayan Das, late Prof. R.R. Krishnan and late Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Additionally, Prof. Madhu Bhalla, (who had moved to Delhi University and retired from there), Prof. Lalima Varma (retd) and Prof. H.S. Prabhakar (retd), also taught at the Centre at various periods during 1994-2019. The faculty members of the Centre have supervised 105 PhD theses, (Chinese Studies 61, Japanese Studies 40, and Korean Studies 4) and 315 MPhil dissertations (Chinese Studies 160, Japanese Studies 111, and Korean Studies 44) till date. In the past, Ms Kamlesh Jain, and Dr. M. M. Kunju, both now retired, served as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively at the Centre.
 
Student Opportunities
Several students of the Centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Nichibunken Fellowship, JSPS, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Korean Government Scholarship (up to 4 years) under the India-Korea Cultural Cooperation Agreement, Academy of Korean Studies Scholarship and China Government Scholarship (up to 4 years) under the India-China Cultural Cooperation Agreement. Students receive fellowships from the ICSSR and there are a number of fellowships and research opportunities from Taiwan. Apart from the scholarships for higher studies and research available at the University level, there are several scholarships available specifically for area studies research. Several grants are also provided for field work at the University level.

The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
