In recognition of its high quality academic and research programme University Grants Commission has accorded the Centre the status of an advance Centre of Russian and Central Asian Area Studies in India. The following two areas of teaching and research are identified by the University Grants Commission as priority areas:
a) Political System/Foreign Policy of Russia b) Socio-economic and Cultural Changes in Central Asian Republics. Other areas of research and teaching interests in the Centre are Russian economy, Politics and Society in Central and Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Baltic Republics.
Some of the new courses, which are identified to be introduced in due course are:
- Population and Ethnographic Studies of Russia and Central Asia
- Environmental Problems in Russia and Central Asia
- Siberian Region
- Security and Conflict Issues
- Gender Issues
- Human Rights
The faculties of the Centre have been honoured with national and international awards and honours for their precious service in the Academic field.

Prof. R. R. Sharma, Senior Professor (Retd.) honoured with Gold Medal and Cash Award for Eminent Personalities of Jammu&Kashmir State for their precious service as educationist to the nation in the years 2002 and 2006, by State Government of Jammu&Kashmir, INDIA.
