Big Data in Urban Planning

Abstract: Big data is the data set that does not fit into any normal computer excel sheet, it is accurate and most authentic  that makes policy makers and urban planner's job easy. It not only help plan urban area with voluminous but also authentic and accurate data minimizing the chances of errors for future projections. This preliminary study focuses on the various uses of big data in urban planning and at the same demonstrates a couple of small sectoral projects in Ahmedabad metropolitan region using big data. These projects are urban mobility and urban food delivery using mobile network users data. The future prospects of use of big data in urban planning has been discussed in detail.  

Second part of the lecture will include the scope of geographer for urban and regional planning and moving ahead to use both conventional and big data platform at CEPT University. 

 

Brief profile of the speaker : Dr Anil Kumar Roy holds a PhD degree in urban geography from CSRD, JNU and a master  degree in urban and regional planning from CEPT University. He specializes in the process of urbanisation and urban theory in global South. His current research interests are big data and urban planning, urbanisation and development, urban environment and poverty. He is also working on planning education in India.
