Abstract: In the last two decades there has been a fundamental change in our understanding of gravity: it is believed that gravity is  holographic, with spacetime reconstructed from a flatland theory with no gravity in two spatial dimensions. This talk will first review the holographic dictionary, which relates gravity to the non-gravitational theory in one less dimension, and we will then discuss two important applications of the holographic correspondence. The first relates to quantum entanglement in strongly interacting systems --- holography maps entanglement into geometric quantities --- while the second application is gravitational waves at cosmological scales.

About the speaker: Marika Taylor is a Professor at the University of Southampton, where she is the Head of Applied Mathematics. Her work in quantum field theory and gravity is well known. She is a  Fellow of the  Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences  and the recipient of the Minerva Prize  of the year 2008. She is a former student and collaborator of Stephen Hawking, and will also talk about her experience of working with him.
