Contesting Universal Grammar: Text and Translation in Dante’s De Vulgari Eloquentia
Abstract: In his unfinished book De Vulgari Eloquentia, written in Latin between 1302 and 1305, Dante presents the epistemological and metaphysical foundations of the vernacular and its presuppositions in a grammar of pluralism. This talk will attempt to articulate a theory of the vernacular based on an analysis of Dante’s text and unravel the politics of translation that obfuscates the challenge it presents to a theory of universal grammar.
