Gender-Based Violence and Humanitarian Crisis: Human rights and development perspectives
Abstract: Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a global problem that involves physical, sexual and psychological harm against women. In India, its high prevalence is connected to gender inequalities that are deep-rooted in the imbalance of power relations among gender. The present qualitative empirical study was conducted in the textile industries in Tirupur, an industrial city in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The research elicited responses on questions corresponding to various forms and types of abuses, causes of abuses, consequences of abuses as well as discussion on the resources available to protect victims, prevent abuse and the barriers to seeking help. The research also sought responses to ways to promote institutional practices that might facilitate appropriate interventions. The study results revealed that the causes of the existence of gender inequalities are associated with themes of: ignorance, poverty, and harmful beliefs related to stereotypical gender expectations. The study results provide recommendations for the reduction of violence against women and teen girls, including interventions to increase protection against GBV. Furthermore, the research highlights the need to safeguard victimized individuals, families and communities, and improve help for protection to protect women and uphold dignity. The findings of the study contribute to a multisectoral approach that addresses justice, health and education for women.
