Abstract: Sites of violence reveal different calibrations of intimate relationships–whether familial or friendship. The talk explores violence manifested in kinship, friendship, and problems in ‘disturbed’ areas. What are the ways in which the deferral of death and maintenance of life affect relations of friendship and kinship when such relations can escape neither scrutiny of the state/ non-state nor the mutual suspicion and anxious impulse of categorizing people. The talk explores relationships of relatedness to inquire into practices of performing care and affection in the face of such dismemberment of the social. The talk attempts to construct the field via fiction and anecdotes, drawing attention to the predicament of living in violent places.
