Teaching Mathematics through Music: A Case Study

Abstract: There is a connection that exists between music and mathematics. Research indicated that the students who learned rhythm had the biggest impact on mathematics learning. This study indicated that children who learned Indian classical music had an impact on mathematics learning. Music teachers in India practiced mathematics concepts in their teaching music. Parents of children who learned music confirmed that music has a lot of impact on mathematics learning and mentioned that the test scores of children in mathematics either increased or remained constant. Further, the parents believed that music helped their children learn difficult concepts in math.
Bio: Dr. Smita Guha is a Full and tenured Professor at St. John’s University, New York. She received her Ph.D. from State University of New York. She has over 28 years of experience teaching in higher education. She has authored four books, four chapters and forty-seven articles. She has presented at numerous conferences. Recently, she received Fulbright US Scholar award for Academic and Professional Excellence.
