 Title: Optical trapping with femtosecond pulses: Excitements, challenges and opportunities

Abstract

The theme of research in our group is to explore, through a combination of theory and experiment, a wide range of problems in condensed phase dynamics with applications in chemistry, biophysics and condensed matter physics. Following a quick overview of the different state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques developed by us to explore ultrafast energy and charge transfer dynamics in a variety of systems, in this talk I will mainly focus on elaborating the concept of ‘escape potential’, arising from nonlinear optical force under femtosecond pulsed excitation, which was first theoretically envisaged by us and subsequently demonstrated through meticulous experiments. I will further discuss how we can harness optical nonlinearity to reverse the direction of force or to split a single trapping potential well into many wells which is promised to have far reaching applications in facile and controlled optical manipulation.
