Working with Japan: Human Resource Management, Work Culture, and Global Careers in Japanese Companies

Abstract: Japanese companies are often known for long-term employment, new graduate recruitment, job rotation, internal human resource development, and strong expectations regarding communication and teamwork. These practices have supported Japan’s economic development, but they can also create challenges for international students and foreign professionals who wish to build careers with Japanese companies. This lecture explains the basic features of Japanese human resource management and work culture, including employment system, career development, Japanese-language expectations, and differences in career mindsets between Japanese companies and foreign talent. It also discusses how Japanese companies are changing in response to globalization, demographic decline, and the need for diversity and innovation. Through this lecture, students will gain practical and analytical insights into working with Japan and building global careers connected to Japanese organizations.
Bio: Prof. Takashi Kumon is a Professor at the Institute for Asian Studies, Asia University, and a recognized expert in global human resource management and development. With over 20 years of lecturing, research and advisory experience, he specializes in recruiting, retaining, and developing international talent in Japan. He advises major Japanese companies and government organizations on creating inclusive workplaces for foreign professionals. He currently serves as a member of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's “Committee on the Employment of Foreign Workers”.
